Seattle CoderDojo News – Jan 19, 2015

Posted on January 19, 2015January 19, 2015 by Greg Bulmash

Tickets Available for Jan 31

Tickets are now available for January 31. We’ve had a LOT of interest this year and despite adding a number of seats, we’re selling out every week and generating waiting lists in the 40-50 child range. We apologize that we can’t add seats as fast as demand increases.

Ways to make sure you get in:

1: Order your tickets when you get this newsletter. We’re still not selling out for a day or two, so if you get your tickets on the Monday they release, you’re in the vanguard.

2: Cancel your tickets if you can’t make it. Login to eventbrite, click the down arrow next to your name, select “My Tickets”, select the order, and you can cancel it. If you need to cancel a partial order (i.e. one kid isn’t coming, one is), email us since only admins can do partial cancellations. The last open spaces get released to kids on the waiting list on Friday morning.

WE OVERBOOK to account for last minute cancellations, so don’t feel bad if little Timmy starts barfing on Friday afternoon. He’s not preventing a child from attending. We plan for a few kids to come down with the sniffles, queazies, or tantrums every week.

But if you remember to cancel by Friday morning, so we have time to find a taker for your ticket, you will earn good karma for some time when you’re on the waiting list.

If you get a cancellation notice:

Once we sell out, Greg usually goes through the orders and looks for accidental duplicate orders. If he finds them, he cancels the oldest order (assuming your most recent order reflects your current needs). Don’t freak out if you get a cancellation notice. It usually means you had a duplicate cancelled and a personal note from Greg just hasn’t arrived yet.

Two polls on our Facebook group

If you’re not a member of our Facebook group, you should join. We restrict membership simply to avoid spammers coming in and posting about special deals on shoes. But if you’ve been on FB a while and look like someone who is both local and actually engages with others, you won’t have a problem getting approved. Just go to our Facebook group and request admission.

We have two polls going on at the moment. One is about how we release tickets and the timing. The other is about how to make the best use of the space we have right now to accommodate different levels of learners while remaining drop-in friendly.

Also, if you want to tweet at us or about us, our handle is @SEACoderDojo.

Save the date: Eastside pie on Pi Day

We’re celebrating Pi Day on March 14th with a special afternoon Dojo on the Eastside. We’ll have coding, hardware hacking, prizes, and pie, of course. We’re partnering with the amazing folks at CenturyLink Cloud to hold an event for 50 kids at their Bellevue offices.

We’ll have regular Dojo at Amazon in the morning from 10-noon, then launch the special Pi Day event at 3/14 1:59 p.m. We will have an Eventbrite sign up for each and open both sign-ups on March 2.

Minecraft Lottery Delayed A Week

Due to some crunch time at work, Greg didn’t have time to finish the signup software. It will debut next Monday. Here’s how it will work…

It’ll be a page on our web site.

You’ll enter your email address. It will be checked against a list of “buyer” addresses for all our events run through EventBrite up through January 17th. If it matches, you will be able to enter three children in the lottery. Depending on how many events you attended, those children will get 1, 3, 5, or 8 entries in the lottery each.

Each child selected will be able to get their Minecraft Class ticket, a parent ticket, and a ticket for a sibling to participate in the other Dojo options pre-reserved for the 6 weeks of the Minecraft class. Roll will be taken in class. Two absences/tardies (over 15 mins late) will result in removal from the class.

You’ll need a laptop capable of running Minecraft, the latest version of Java, and a Mojang license for the PC version of Minecraft. We will not be providing loaners for this class. There will be homework assigned.

We’ll provide the sign-up URL in next Monday’s newsletter.
