Seattle CoderDojo News – May 11

Posted on May 11, 2015May 11, 2015 by Greg Bulmash

You don’t have to code to volunteer

Putting on Dojos takes all kinds of people. Think of us as a startup that sells free awesome and is dedicated to not making money. If you’re a marketer, designer, product manager, administrator, lawyer, or accountant, we could use your help to optimize, organize, and thrive. If you think you can help, email us.

But yeah, we can always use coders as well.

Tickets for this Saturday are still available.

There is no Dojo on May 23 for Memorial day. Tickets for May 30 will become available next Monday.

Game camp for girls with partial scholarship

Girls Make Games is running 3-week summer camps in the greater Seattle area for girls who want to learn to program games. The target age range is 11-14, though they have had older and younger.

If you’re interested in signing up your daughter, the camp runs $1,500 for 3 weeks, which is less expensive than some other local options, but they’re also offering 50% scholarships for a small number of Seattle CoderDojo girls.

When you register, they’ll ask if you need financial aid. On the financial aid application, note that your daughter is a Seattle CoderDojo student. They may need to confirm prior attendance with us before granting the scholarship, so if you apply for this, email us and let us know it’s okay to share your child’s attendance information with them. If you do not, our commitment to child privacy will prevent us from disclosing information about your child to a 3rd party.

Find out more and register at the Girls Make Games site.

Summer Python and Android Apps

The Summer Python Workshop still has remote student tickets (participate from home) left. Remember, if you’re signing a child up for a remote ticket, you do not need to sign yourself up for a parent ticket. We only need parents to sign up for tickets when they’ll be on-site.

The Android workshop has not gone as quickly as planned. We took two weeks to go through the content planned for week one and ran into some problems:

  • People had more trouble with GitHub than expected
  • Older versions of Android were not running the app properly.

The week 2 guide is being worked on in light of that and will be the week 3 guide instead. If you are participating remotely, the livestream will always be on our Seattle CoderDojo YouTube Channel.
