Tickets for October 22
This will be the last week of the “Build a Website” Room. Not to worry, kids who want to start or continue with website building in November can do so in the Developer Room. In the meantime, if you have a suggestion for a room topic for November (even better if you can recommend some tutorials), drop a note to info@seattlecoderdojo.com with your suggestion.

Moving Kids from Scratch to JavaScript
At our most recent Dojo, we extended the scope of the Beginners Room to include Bitsbox. It’s a commercial product, but has a substantial enough free offering that we felt it could provide value. And when they came and did a demo, the feedback we got from some parents was that this felt like the middle step between Scratch and JavaScript that their child had been needing.
Bitsbox requires typing and writing code, but offers fun projects and a sort of simplified JavaScript that can help children get comfortable and confident enough to move into more complex coding. So for a while, we’ll be experimenting with offering Bitsbox to kids who want to make that step up to writing code, but need to take it a little slower. They are not paying us, and we are not going to sell anyone on buying their subscriptions, but we think it’s worthwhile to continue this experiment. If your child is a longtime Scratch Room Resident, sign them up to try Bitsbox next time and let us know what you and they think.
