NEWCOMERS WELCOME
A FREE CLUB WHERE CHILDREN LEARN COMPUTING SKILLS
Seattle CoderDojo is a free club for kids, powered by volunteers, donors, and sponsors. We help kids learn computer programming by building projects and working through tutorials with periodic specialty workshops.
WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK?
Ages below (except for FreeCodeCamp.com) are recommendations and not strictly enforced. Remember that whatever room you sign your child up for, you can always move to another at any time so long as there’s somewhere for them to sit.
Beginners (All Ages):
If they’ve never coded or had just a little experience a while back, get a ticket for this room. We’ll get them started on some tutorials to get them some confidence and some basic concepts.
Scratch (2nd Grade & Up):
Scratch is a programming tool that lets kids create programs by combining different pieces that do things. No typing is required, no special software is needed, and after they’ve done a couple of Beginner tutorials, they’ll be able to jump into this pretty easily. It does require Flash so iPads and Android tablets won’t work.
Hacker Room (4th Grade & Up):
A free-form hacking space for older kids and teens. Try a recommended online tutorial in a variety of programming languages, get help planning a web site or app you want to build, or get help with a site/app/robot/homework you’re already working on.
In 2017, we’ll also periodically have some electronics equipment in this room for kids who want to do hardware hacking. This week, we’ll have 4 brand new Kano Kit Raspberry Pi computer building kits. The kids who would like to work on putting them together can work in groups.
“Programming for Beginners” using Minecraft (3rd Grade & up):
WEEK 1 OF 5 (March 4 – April 1)
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. MUST HAVE A WINDOWS, MAC, OR LINUX LAPTOP WITH A LICENSED COPY OF “PC MINECRAFT” – NO LOANERS AVAILABLE FOR THIS WORKSHOP – Learn how to install one of the most popular Minecraft community servers, Spigot, and use the ScriptCraft Minecraft Mod to learn the basics of programming using the JavaScript programming language. Over the course of the workshop, we’ll go from your first “Hello World” to making flaming sheep fall from the sky.
WEEK 1: Install Day. We’ve found we have to dedicate the first session to getting everyone up and running with the software. We’ll have an updated installation tutorial and send it out to all registered kids about a week ahead of time. So if you can complete the tutorial on your own, you’ll be able to skip this session and join us on the 11th. If not, then we’ll have mentors ready to lead you through getting installed and ready to run.
THIS IS A 5-WEEK TICKET. All tickets on the same order will also be good for the whole 5-week session.
FreeCodeCamp.com (8th grade & up):
Free Code Camp is an online, self-paced, free educational program that starts from beginner level and helps its learners become certified full-stack JavaScript developers. Teens work at their own pace, and can get help and camaraderie at our meetups.
