NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. LOANER LAPTOPS AVAILABLE*

Seattle CoderDojo is a free meetup for kids, powered by volunteers, donors, and sponsors. Our focus is to instill a love for problem-solving and a confidence with tech that will make it possible for your child to learn whatever tech skills they’ll need to through their life and career, whether they become a software developer, cardiac surgeon, or artisan baker.

ONE TICKET PER CHILD PLEASE. IF YOU ARE UNSURE, PICK *ONE* ROOM AND WE CAN ADJUST WHEN YOU ARRIVE.

WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK?

Ages below (except for FreeCodeCamp.com) are recommendations and not strictly enforced. Remember that whatever room you sign your child up for, you can always move to another at any time so long as there’s somewhere for them to sit.

Beginners (All Ages):

If they’ve never coded or had just a little experience a while back, get a ticket for this room. We’ll get them started on some tutorials to get them some confidence and some basic concepts.

Scratch (2nd Grade & Up):

Scratch is a programming tool that lets kids create programs by combining different pieces that do things. No typing is required, no special software is needed, and after they’ve done a couple of Beginner tutorials, they’ll be able to jump into this pretty easily. It does require Flash so iPads and Android tablets won’t work.

Hacker Room (4th Grade & Up):

A free-form hacking space for older kids and teens. Learn Python, Web Design, Node.js, or a variety of other technologies. Tell us what you’re working on or want to learn and we’ll help you along.

SPECIAL FOR OCT/NOV: Cryptography with Python (Week 3 of 5)

How do computers keep secrets, and how do they decode them? Learn the basics of cryptography using Python. We’ll be working on exercises from Al Sweigart’s free book Hacking Secret Ciphers with Python with extra content from Mentor Nick.

FreeCodeCamp.com (8th grade & up):

Free Code Camp is an online, self-paced, free educational program that starts from beginner level and helps its learners become certified full-stack JavaScript developers (“full-stack” means being able to design *all* parts of a web app on both the front and back ends of the process). Teens work at their own pace, and can get help and camaraderie at our meetups.
