A FREE CLUB WHERE CHILDREN LEARN COMPUTER PROGRAMMING SKILLS
Seattle CoderDojo is a free club for kids, powered by volunteers, donors, and sponsors. We help kids learn computer programming by building projects and working through tutorials with periodic specialty workshops.
WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK?
Ages below (except for FreeCodeCamp.com) are recommendations and not strictly enforced. Remember that whatever room you sign your child up for, you can always move to another at any time so long as there’s somewhere for them to sit.
Beginners (All Ages):
If they’ve never coded or had just a little experience a while back, get a ticket for this room. We’ll get them started on some tutorials to get them some confidence and some basic concepts.
Scratch (2nd Grade & Up):
Scratch is a programming tool that lets kids create programs by combining different pieces that do things. No typing is required, no special software is needed, and after they’ve done a couple of Beginner tutorials, they’ll be able to jump into this pretty easily. It does require Flash so iPads and Android tablets won’t work.
Hacker Room (4th Grade & Up):
A free-form hacking space for older kids and teens. Try a recommended online tutorial in a variety of programming languages, get help planning a web site or app you want to build, or get help with a site/app/robot/homework you’re already working on.
In 2017, we’ll also periodically have some electronics equipment in this room for kids who want to do hardware hacking. This week, we’ll have 4 brand new Kano Kit Raspberry Pi computer building kits. The kids who would like to work on putting them together can work in groups.
Intro to Linux (4th Grade & up):
WEEK 1 OF 5 (Jan 14 – Feb 11)
Learn about one of the most powerful, flexible, and completely customizable operating systems in the world. In this 5-week workshop, kids will learn how to set up a virtual machine running Linux on their laptop, set up accounts and permissions, work with the command line and Bash shell, and more. Our lead mentor for this is an IT professional with multiple-certifications, and we’ll also have professional developers on hand to lend a developer perspective on why Linux is so powerful and useful. This one registration will register your child for all 5 weeks of the workship.
FreeCodeCamp.com (8th grade & up):
ALL KIDS MUST HAVE AN ADULT ATTEND ALONG WITH THEM. NO DROP-OFFS. ONE ADULT CAN BE THE GUARDIAN FOR MULTIPLE KIDS.
PARKING IS NOT FREE, BUT THE GARAGE ACROSS THE STREET IS $2.44 (INCLUDING CITY FEES AND TAXES) FOR THE *DAY*. ENTER ON REPUBLICAN ST, BETWEEN TERRY AVE N AND BOREN AVE N.
PLEASE BRING A LAPTOP IF YOU CAN. WE HAVE SOME ON-SITE LOANERS, BUT WE DO NOT GUARANTEE WE WILL HAVE ENOUGH TO MEET DEMAND.
