NEWCOMERS WELCOME
A FREE CLUB WHERE CHILDREN LEARN COMPUTING SKILLS
Seattle CoderDojo is a free club for kids, powered by volunteers, donors, and sponsors. We help kids learn computer programming by building projects and working through tutorials with periodic specialty workshops.
WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK?
Ages below (except for FreeCodeCamp.com) are recommendations and not strictly enforced. Remember that whatever room you sign your child up for, you can always move to another at any time so long as there’s somewhere for them to sit.
Beginners (All Ages):
If they’ve never coded or had just a little experience a while back, get a ticket for this room. We’ll get them started on some tutorials to get them some confidence and some basic concepts.
Scratch (All Ages):
Scratch is a programming tool that lets kids create programs by combining different pieces that do things. No typing is required, no special software is needed, and after they’ve done a couple of Beginner tutorials, they’ll be able to jump into this pretty easily. It does require Flash so iPads and Android tablets won’t work.
Developers Room (4th Grade & Up):
This is for older kids and teens who are (or want to be) working in high-level languages like Java, PHP, JavaScript, and Python. Try a recommended online tutorial, get help planning a project to work on (like your own web site or app), get help with a project you’re already working on, or hack on a group project.
Intro to Algorithms (5th Grade & up):
WEEK 4 OF 4. YOUR TICKET FROM THE FIRST WEEK WORKS THIS WEEK.
What is an algorithm? How do they work? How are they used in computer programming? Learn how to understand and create algorithms, then work on code to implement them. We’ll teach the syntax of the programming language used, but kids should be comfortable with algebraic thinking and basic programming concepts like variables, loops, and functions.
FreeCodeCamp.com (8th grade & up):
Free Code Camp is an online, self-paced, free educational program that starts from beginner level and helps its learners become certified developers. Teens work at their own pace, and can get help and camaraderie at our meetups.
