NEWCOMERS WELCOME
A FREE CLUB WHERE CHILDREN LEARN COMPUTING SKILLS
Seattle CoderDojo is a free club for kids, powered by volunteers, donors, and sponsors. We help kids learn computer programming by building projects and working through tutorials with periodic specialty workshops.
WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK?
Ages below (except for FreeCodeCamp.com) are recommendations and not strictly enforced. Remember that whatever room you sign your child up for, you can always move to another at any time so long as there’s somewhere for them to sit.
Beginners (All Ages):
If they’ve never coded or had just a little experience a while back, get a ticket for this room. We’ll get them started on some tutorials to get them some confidence and some basic concepts.
Scratch (2nd Grade & Up):
Scratch is a programming tool that lets kids create programs by combining different pieces that do things. No typing is required, no special software is needed, and after they’ve done a couple of Beginner tutorials, they’ll be able to jump into this pretty easily. It does require Flash so iPads and Android tablets won’t work.
Hacker Room (4th Grade & Up):
A free-form hacking space for older kids and teens. Try a recommended online tutorial in a variety of programming languages, get help planning a web site or app you want to build, or get help with a site/app/robot/homework you’re already working on.
SUMMER OF GAMES – Character Design
For our last week, we have Mark Barrett presenting “Beginners Character Design for Games.” Mark is a DigiPen graduate who has worked for Nintendo and PopCap, and is currently a Lead Artist at WG Cells.
Mark will explain the essential ingredients for a strong character design, then help the kids put them to use as they design new characters of their own. No prior art experience required, no laptop required.
FreeCodeCamp.com (8th grade & up):
Free Code Camp is an online, self-paced, free educational program that starts from beginner level and helps its learners become certified full-stack JavaScript developers (“full-stack” means being able to design *all* parts of a web app on both the front and back ends of the process). Teens work at their own pace, and can get help and camaraderie at our meetups.
