Seattle Coder Dojo News – May 26

Posted on May 26, 2015June 4, 2015 by Greg Bulmash

May 30th Tickets + Summer Schedule

Get your tickets for this Saturday.

Summer schedule means we’ll only be meeting every other week. This is to prevent burnout and because we shouldn’t waste those few beautiful Seattle mornings we get during summer. The schedule is:

May 30 (this Saturday – get tickets)
June 13, 27
July 11, 25
August 8, 22

We will resume a weekly schedule and our next Minecraft Workshop on September 12.

SNOHOMISH COUNTY CODERDOJO

There is a new CoderDojo group that just formed and is meeting on Sundays at the Mukilteo Library. For all of you northerners who have been dying for a Dojo closer to home, go to this and support it. Tell your friends, your church, your office, everyone.

Get Tickets for Snohomish CoderDojo on Sunday, May 31 at Mukilteo Library

Snohomish County CoderDojo is an independent Dojo, not a subsidiary or satellite of Seattle CoderDojo. It’s mostly a core group of two couples looking to build something like we have in Seattle and they could use help. Show your support by getting out to their Sunday afternoon event. If you can’t make it out, donate $5 or $10 to their GoFundMe campaign so they have the resources to continue holding these.

JavaScript Gaming is Coming

In June our rotating room will switch to mentor Avi’s JavaScript gaming workshop. It will be a progressive 5-session workshop on June 13, June 27, July 11, August 8, and August 22. Sign-ups will begin next Monday. Here’s Avi’s description:

“In this workshop, students will develop a game using Javascript. Over the course of 5 lessons, we will build the components and assemble them into a functional game, while discussing higher-order programming concepts such as debugging and object-oriented programming. Each lesson will begin with a short discussion followed by interactive programming exercises. By the end of the series, students will have each constructed a unique, playable game. Students should have some experience in coding but knowledge of JavaScript is not required.”

SPONSORS NEEDED: International Nodebots Day

July 25th is International Nodebots Day and we’ve been talking with some members of the local Node.js and maker communities about giving up our normal format that day for a 2.5 hour Nodebot Hackathon in all 4 rooms.

What are Nodebots? They’re generally inexpensive do-it-yourself robots, controlled with Arduino boards and programmed using Node.js. We believe we can put together a kit for a simple wheeled robot for around $50, then kid and adult participants would put together and program their robots during the hackathon.

We’re hoping to raise $5,000 to have 100 participants with each getting a nodebot to take home, mostly by bringing on some public-spirited companies to sponsor the event. They will get their logos on all the literature promoting the event and onscreen at the event. We’d plan to put out a mix of tickets for adult learners, child learners, and “invited child learners” (through community groups in underserved areas).

If you know of a company that would consider this a worthwhile expenditure, please have them contact info@seattlecoderdojo.com. We’re trying to lock down sponsorships by June 27 so we have 4 weeks to acquire kits and promote the event.
