DESCRIPTIONS
Scratch Room (2nd Grade & Up):
Scratch is a programming tool for kids, created by MIT. It lets kids create programs by fitting together blocks on screen. This is a consistently popular room.
Dojo Room (All Ages – Beginner to advanced):
The Dojo Room is a mix of all levels, absolute beginners welcome. Whether you need help writing your first line of code or creating the next Facebook, come meet our Dojo room mentors and they’ll help.
Intro to Unity Game Programming – Week 4 (4th Grade & Up – Intermediate)
In this Unity tutorial, you will learn to create a “catch the ball” 2D game with pregenerated assets. This covers everything from creating a new project to learning about Unity’s physics engine, to learning how to write C# scripts to trigger certain events, culminating in a complete game. This is a multi-week workshop where each week builds on the one before.
Pre-requisites: Requires a laptop capable of running Unity personal (we *might* have some loaners available, check first). Please note the Intermediate skill level. Prior beginner experience with a programming language is required to be able to pick up the concepts and do the coding for the workshop.
Make an Interactive Website with Node – Week 4 (3rd Grade & Up – Novice)
In this introduction to building web interactive websites, you will learn basic HTML by modifying and personalizing an “About Me” website, but that’s just week 1. In following weeks, you’ll learn how to create a database powered members-only section with passwords, user profiles, and a message area. This is a multi-week workshop where each week builds on the one before.
Pre-requisites: This class will require typing and writing code. Kids should have decent keyboarding skills and some familiarity with basic programming concepts like strings, loops, and comparison logic. We’ll go at a moderate pace. Please create a free account on Glitch, which we’ll be using to create our code and host our websites.
Professional Developer Certification (8th grade & up):
Get your child started on an independent-study professional certification program with FreeCodeCamp.com. Supported by donors and volunteers, Free Code Camp certifications have helped over 10,000 people get their first tech job or level up in their tech career. Our mentors will help your child get started and then provide tutoring and guidance at our meetups. Each certification requires approximately 300 hours of online lessons and project work, so plan for your child to do the majority of their work on this at home. This takes place in the Dojo Room, but we give it special space here to call it to people’s attention.
