Posted on October 19, 2019November 4, 2019 by Greg Bulmash

Saturday, November 2, 2019 – 9:45 am to noon – Ticket order form at bottom of page

Seattle CoderDojo is a free  STEM skills meetup for kids, powered by volunteers. Parents must remain on premises. Free underground garage parking is available nearby.

WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK AT A GLANCE:

  • Scratch Room (2nd Grade & Up)

  • Dojo Room (All Ages – Beginner to Advanced)

  • Python Beginner Tutorial (8 and up)

  • Python Intermediate Tutorial (11 and up)

  • Professional Developer Certification (8th grade & up)

Ages are recommendations and not strictly enforced.

DESCRIPTIONS

Scratch Room (2nd Grade & Up):

Scratch is a programming tool for kids, created by MIT. It lets kids create programs by fitting together blocks on screen. This is a consistently popular room.

Dojo Room (All Ages – Beginner to advanced):

The Dojo Room is a mix of all levels, absolute beginners welcome. Whether you need help writing your first line of code or creating the next Facebook, come meet our Dojo room mentors and they’ll help.

PYTHON TUTORIALS

In the rotating workshops, we’ll introduce students to Python or help those who know a little level up.. We’ll work in Repl. It, a free online coding environment. No specialls installs needed; just a modern web browser and a keyboard.

Beginner: Create a PyPet. Our mentors will help guide students through coding up a virtual pet you need to take care of.

Intermediate: We’ll implement the Sonar Treasure Hunt from Al Sweigart’s “Invent Your Own Games with Python.” This is similar to MineSweeper, a game that is sometimes used as a coding interview test.

Professional Developer Certification (8th grade & up):

Get your child started on an independent-study professional certification program with FreeCodeCamp.com. Supported by donors and volunteers, Free Code Camp certifications have helped over 10,000 people get their first tech job or level up in their tech career. Our mentors will help your child get started and then provide tutoring and guidance at our meetups. Each certification requires approximately 300 hours of online lessons and project work, so plan for your child to do the majority of their work on this at home. This takes place in the Dojo Room, but we give it special space here to call it to people’s attention.
