PLEASE BRING A LAPTOP IF YOU CAN. ONE TICKET PER CHILD PLEASE.
WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK?
Ages below (except for professional certification) are recommendations and not strictly enforced.
Beginners (All Ages):
If your child has never coded or had just a little experience a while back, get a ticket for this room. We’ll get them started on beginner tutorials to get them some confidence and some basic concepts.
Scratch (2nd Grade & Up):
Scratch is a programming tool for kids, created by MIT. It lets kids create programs by fitting together blocks on screen. This is a consistently popular room.
Hacker Room (4th Grade & Up):
What do you want to learn? Kids can bring their own projects to work on and get help with, or they can take advantage of our learning paths which combine free online tutorials and project ideas to help them achieve mastery of various tech skills and programming languages.
SPECIAL WORKSHOP: Building a Platformer Game (Week 1 of 5)
Using the Phaser.js library, we’ll build a web-based, side-scrolling platformer game in JavaScript. Think Super Mario Bros. or Jetpack Joyride. Each week will build upon the last. The first week will cover setting up our development environment, bringing in graphics, animating a character, and a basic jump control.
Pre-requisites: Typing will be required. We will be working in JavaScript. Students must have a basic understanding of variables, comparison operators, functions, and loops.
Professional Developer Certification (8th grade & up):
Through FreeCodeCamp.com, teens can learn developer skills and earn professional certification in topics like web site design, building APIs and microservices, data visualization, and information security. We’ll get your child started on an independent study program with FreeCodeCamp.com and then provide tutoring and guidance at our meetups. Each certification requires approximately 300 hours of online lessons and project work, so plan for your child to do the majority of their work on this at home.
