Posted on October 18, 2019October 29, 2019 by Greg Bulmash

Saturday, October 26, 2019 – 9:45 am to noon – Ticket order form at bottom of page

Seattle CoderDojo is a free  STEM skills meetup for kids, powered by volunteers. Parents must remain on premises. Free underground garage parking is available nearby.

WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK AT A GLANCE:

  • Scratch Room (2nd Grade & Up)

  • Dojo Room (All Ages – Beginner to Advanced)

  • C# Beginner Tutorial (8 and up)

  • C# Intermediate Tutorial (11 and up)

  • Professional Developer Certification (8th grade & up)

Ages are recommendations and not strictly enforced.

DESCRIPTIONS

Scratch Room (2nd Grade & Up):

Scratch is a programming tool for kids, created by MIT. It lets kids create programs by fitting together blocks on screen. This is a consistently popular room.

Dojo Room (All Ages – Beginner to advanced):

The Dojo Room is a mix of all levels, absolute beginners welcome. Whether you need help writing your first line of code or creating the next Facebook, come meet our Dojo room mentors and they’ll help.

C# TUTORIALS

We’ll be teaching tutorials on two programming challenges that occasionally come up in REAL developer interviews. We’ll be using the C# online editor at Repl.It to run these text-based challenges.

Beginner: Learn to write FizzBuzz! FizzBuzz tests simple reasoning and mathematics programming. If your kids understand addition, multiplication, and division, they can understand FizzBuzz.

Intermediate: As simple as it is to play, it’s a lot harder to code TicTacToe. How do you display the board, get the player’s moves, check for when someone has won, and program a simple AI to play against? Learn this and a few of the finer points of using object oriented code in C#.

Professional Developer Certification (8th grade & up):

Get your child started on an independent-study professional certification program with FreeCodeCamp.com. Supported by donors and volunteers, Free Code Camp certifications have helped over 10,000 people get their first tech job or level up in their tech career. Our mentors will help your child get started and then provide tutoring and guidance at our meetups. Each certification requires approximately 300 hours of online lessons and project work, so plan for your child to do the majority of their work on this at home. This takes place in the Dojo Room, but we give it special space here to call it to people’s attention.
